For over 250 years Hadleigh Guildhall in Suffolk accommodated the parish deserving poor, just a short distance the other side of the graveyard from St Mary's church. In 1793, workhouse inmates Amy, Ben, Daisy and Sarah, like thousands across England, were dependent on the master for their welfare. Employed by St Mary’s Church vestry on behalf of parish ratepayers, Daniel Ward put them to work inside the workhouse and outside for local farmers and businessmen. The workhouse master wielded control under the watchful eye of vestry members like Reverend Watson and Doctor Parsons, but were they aware of everything? What if he was greedy and cruel, or worse?…
